What is a Dental Emergency?
What to do During a Dental Emergency
Toothaches are the most common dental emergency. They are a result of hidden decay that can infect the tooth and root, causing pain that radiates into the bone and surrounding teeth. Over-the-counter pain medication is the first step to help reduce pain and swelling. Try dabbing clove oil onto the tooth, or add a drop of clove oil and a drop of olive oil to a cotton ball and rest it on the tooth, allowing the oil to soak in. If you don’t have oil, crush some of the herbs and place it on the tooth.
Another home remedy for a toothache, until you can see a dentist, is to use turmeric paste, made with a little of the herb mixed with water until it is a paste-like substance. Place it onto the tooth for pain relief and to help reduce the chance of infection. A cold or warm compress on the cheek may also help provide comfort. Call our office to schedule an appointment right away and let us know you are in pain.

An abscess is a bump or bubble on the gum, and is the result of an infection. These should be treated as soon as possible to avoid the infection from spreading. Schedule an emergency visit with us so the dentist can find the cause of the infection and eliminate it. Try rinsing with a solution of warm salt water with a dash of baking soda every couple of hours to help slow the spread of infection and try over-the-counter pain medication until you can get in to see us. Other home remedies to try are clove oil for pain, oregano essential oil mixed with olive or coconut oil to ward of more infection, and a cold compress to reduce swelling.

Knocked-out teeth may be the result of an accident, and there is hope if you lose a tooth. If you can save it, quickly rinse the broken tooth with water, but do not scrub or wash it. If it can fit back into place, quickly put it back into the socket. If you cannot fit it back into the socket, place it in a glass of full-fat milk or saline solution and let us know. Often if one can get to the dentist within 30 minutes, a tooth may be saved.
